The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) has unveiled plans to introduce 1,000 electric buses across major city routes this year, marking a significant step towards eco-friendly urban mobility. This initiative is part of the Greater Hyderabad zone’s mission to enhance public transport infrastructure while reducing pollution levels in the city.
Authorities are currently preparing route maps and assigning supervisors to high-traffic areas to ensure efficient operations. The TSRTC aims to achieve a 90% occupancy rate by deploying electric buses on long and suburban routes, catering to the city’s growing commuter needs.
With a vision to operate 3,000 electric buses in the future, the TSRTC has initiated infrastructure development to support this expansion. Currently, 200 electric buses are operational in Hyderabad, with charging stations established at Jubilee Bus Station (JBS), Hyderabad Central University (HCU), Miyapur, and BHEL depots. Plans are also underway to install additional charging units, including one at Hayathnagar.

Electric buses are poised to significantly reduce the city’s carbon footprint. Unlike diesel buses, which emit 1,150 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer along with other pollutants, electric buses are zero-emission vehicles. Studies show a 90% reduction in emissions with electric buses.
Operational costs are also considerably lower, with electric buses costing ₹8 per kilometer compared to ₹20 for diesel buses. This economic advantage is expected to reduce TSRTC’s financial burden while offering commuters a more sustainable transport option.
The TSRTC plans to introduce 300 additional electric buses by 2025 as part of a phased implementation strategy. With these advancements, the corporation aims to make pollution-free public transport a reality for Hyderabad, setting a benchmark for sustainable urban mobility in the region.
