Madhya Pradesh is reeling from two horrific incidents of rape, one in Indore and another in Rewa, as public outrage continues to grow over earlier cases, including the August rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital and the assault of two minors in Badlapur, Maharashtra. These recent incidents have further ignited calls for action and accountability from the state government.
In the Rewa case, a couple enjoying a picnic near a temple was viciously attacked. The husband was tied to a tree while his wife was gang-raped. The perpetrators not only assaulted her but also filmed the attack, threatening to release the video online if the couple dared to file a police complaint. This shocking incident occurred on October 21 and has left the local community in a state of disbelief and horror.
In a separate incident in Indore, a neurodivergent woman was sexually assaulted by a daily wage worker identified as Sonu. CCTV footage revealed the woman wandering, half-naked and bleeding, in the Sadar Bazaar area around 3:45 AM on Tuesday. Police acted swiftly upon reviewing the footage, which showed Sonu leading the woman to a waste treatment facility shortly before she was discovered. Following a police investigation, Sonu confessed to the assault.

The Indore incident has drawn sharp criticism from the state’s Congress chief, Jitu Patwari, who took to social media platform X to condemn the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He expressed outrage over the condition of the victim, stating, “The daughter is naked on the road (while) the Chief Minister is busy at an event.” Patwari’s comments referenced the Ladli Behna Yojna, a women’s welfare initiative launched by former Chief Minister Shivraj Chouhan, which was credited with helping the BJP secure victory in the last Assembly election.
Patwari further likened the treatment of the Indore woman to the disrobing of Draupadi from the Hindu epic Mahabharata, questioning, “Can’t the Chief Minister who considers himself ‘God’ see the disrobing of Draupadi?” He expressed his anger and concern over the rising crimes against women, highlighting the perceived inaction of the Chief Minister.
In response to the growing outcry, junior Minister Narendra Shivaji Patel stated that the accused in the Indore case had been arrested and emphasized the BJP government’s commitment to addressing such issues sensitively. “The law will teach the accused a lesson… they will not be spared,” he assured the public.
Mr. Patel also reiterated the government’s focus on the welfare of neurodivergent individuals, stating that the Social Justice and Welfare Department is actively involved in providing support for them. He claimed, “Regardless of the city, the department is carrying out responsibilities diligently.”
As Madhya Pradesh grapples with these alarming incidents, the calls for justice and accountability continue to rise. The state government faces mounting pressure to not only address these specific cases but also implement broader measures to enhance the safety and security of women across the region. With public outrage at a peak, the demand for swift and effective action is louder than ever.
