Two Students Hospitalized After Snakebite at Peddapur Gurukul, Parents Demand Relocation of School

Two Class 8 students from Peddapur Gurukul were hospitalized this week after reportedly suffering snakebites, igniting concern among parents and local authorities. Yashwanth, one of the affected students, was rushed to the hospital morning after showing signs of a snakebite on his leg and hand.

Akhil, another Class 8 student, was admitted the previous day with symptoms of vomiting and pain in his hand, where bite marks were visible. School authorities suspect both students were bitten by the same snake on Tuesday night, though their symptoms developed at different times.

While Akhil exhibited symptoms within hours of the bite, Yashwanth’s condition worsened later. Doctors suspect that the snake responsible for the bites might have been a Russell’s viper, known for its venom, which can have delayed effects. If untreated, the venom can cause fatal organ damage over time.

Upon learning of the incidents, District Collector Satya Prasad visited the hospital in Korutla to assess the condition of the students. He also visited the school to understand the situation better and spoke with the doctors treating the students. This incident comes in the wake of a series of tragic events at Peddapur Gurukul earlier this year, where two students died from suspected snakebites.

In July, 13-year-old Rajarapu Ganaditya, a Class VII student, passed away, followed by the death of 12-year-old Yedamalla Anirudh in August, both from suspected snakebites. Following these fatalities, the school was temporarily closed, and a cleaning operation was carried out, which led to the killing of at least four snakes on the premises. Despite these efforts, the recent incidents have sparked renewed fears and outrage among parents.

In response to the latest developments, parents of the students staged a protest on the road, demanding the relocation of Peddapur Gurukula School Junior College to a safer location. They called for a permanent solution to address the recurring snakebite incidents and ensure the safety of their children.

Former MLA Vidyasagar also voiced his concerns, criticizing the government for its handling of the situation. He pointed out that while incidents like these did not occur at Gurukul schools under the BRS government, they were frequent during Congress rule. He accused the government of misleading the public with promises of integrated schools while failing to provide adequate funding for existing institutions, which he believes led to the current problems.

Vidysagar also visited the students receiving treatment at the Korutla hospital to express his support. The ongoing protests and the tragic deaths earlier this year have highlighted the growing frustration among parents and the need for a comprehensive solution to prevent such incidents in the future.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of these snakebites, the demand for action to ensure the safety of students at the Peddapur Gurukul grows louder, with hopes for better safety measures or relocation of the school to a safer environment.
