Uber to recruit 140 engineers in Hyderabad and Bengaluru

With business losses due to coronavirus driving employers to lay off their workers abruptly, the hunt for new jobs has forced people to pick up the smallest and most bizarre ways to earn money.

After laying off 600 of its full-time positioned employees, Uber has announced on Wednesday that it will be hiring 140 new engineers to be a part of its tech team in the cities of Hyderabad and Bengaluru.

In its official statement, Uber clarified that the engineers its recruiting have to construct products in arenas involving rider and driver growth, the marketplace, customer service, delivery, digital payments, safety, risk and compliance, and finance technology.

This new declaration resulted after the company appointed JayaramValliyur in the post of its senior director for heading the global finance tech team that exists in various locations over the world.

Before starting work with Uber, Mr. Valliyur served Amazon for 14 years. His role included ascending the growth for its development center in India. Moreover, he led workers who were responsible for transportation, new seller registration, and identity verification.

“We’re leveraging India’s outstanding product and engineering talent to fuel our next wave of products and services,” Jayaram said on Uber’s tech hiring drive.

“We’re looking to hire engineers who’re deeply technical and passionate about solving complex problems in the mobility and delivery space.”

In the latter half of May this year, Uber had fired 600 employees in a bid to gravitate away from the losses incurred due to the global market hit in light of coronavirus. Its President for Indian and South Asian departments, PradeepParameswaran had said, “The impact of COVID-19 and the unpredictable nature of the recovery has left Uber India with no choice but to reduce the size of its workforce. Around 600 full-time positions across driver and rider support, as well as other functions, are being impacted.”

He expressed the concerns and dismay of the company in having to lay off the said employees, “Today is an incredibly sad day for colleagues leaving the Uber family and all of us at the company. We made the decision now so that we can look to the future with confidence. I want to apologize to departing colleagues and extend my heartfelt thanks to them for their contributions to Uber, the riders, and the driver-partners we serve in India.”

The fired employees were going to receive 10 weeks of salary along with 6 months of medical insurance.

The company has until now laid off close to 6,700 workers because of the pandemic. Adding to the measures taken by the company to withstand the effect of the crisis, Uber also shut its office in Mumbai, taking the tally of the total number of closed down offices to 45, ultimately snatching the jobs of several people.

After its recent investment in creating masks recognition abilities by the tech team, it has ensured that its registered drivers wear masks to protect themselves along with the passengers.

For making a stronger and more efficient way to adhere to the precautionary measures, the engineers at Uber have been accelerating digital payments and also use advanced Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to seamlessly onboard restaurants menus onto Uber marketplace.
