UGD Works to Be Completed Before Monsoon, Says Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao

As part of the ongoing efforts to upgrade the underground drainage (UGD) system in Khammam city, Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao has directed officials to expedite the pipeline works and ensure completion before the onset of the monsoon season.

During an inspection visit on Monday, the Minister, accompanied by Khammam Municipal Corporation Commissioner Abhishek Augustya, supervised the UGD construction works along the Bypass Road. The inspection was part of a broader review of progress under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Nageswara Rao informed that underground sewage works worth ₹189.50 crore are underway under the AMRUT 2.0 (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) initiative. A major component of this includes the laying of a 9.6 km sewage pipeline from Khanapuram Lake to Thamsalapuram Lake. These pipelines will connect internal drains and transfer sewage to designated treatment plants.

He added that a sewage treatment plant (STP) with a capacity of 44 million litres per day (MLD) is being constructed at Thamsalapuram, while another STP with a 9.5 MLD capacity is coming up at Puttakota.

The Minister stressed the urgency of completing both sewage and stormwater drainage works ahead of the rainy season. He enquired about the daily progress in terms of pipeline length being laid and urged officials to deploy additional manpower and JCB vehicles to speed up the process.

Reiterating the importance of timely completion, Minister Rao set a deadline of two months and emphasized that every effort must be made to avoid delays, especially with the monsoon approaching.

The UGD project is expected to significantly improve sanitation and prevent waterlogging in Khammam city during heavy rains.
