Uncertainty Over Polls In State With Other States?

Hyderabad: Uncertainty and suspense is looming large over the conduct of elections in Telangana State along with four other states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chattisgarh and Mizoram as the Election Commission of India seemed to be wavering in this regard.

Chief Election Commissioner O P Rawat indicated in New Delhi that as of now nothing can be said about holding early elections in Telangana along with four other states. As a matter of fact a the Central Election Commission is scheduled to meet this evening to discuss about holding polls in Telangana long with the other four states. Even the State Election Commissioner Rajat Kumar was invited to be present in the national capital to participate in the deliberations.

However the State Election Commissioner told the media here in Hyderabad that he would not be attending the CEC meeting as he is preoccupied with some important tasks here. However he is likely to go to the national capital on Monday for talks.

To a pointed question as to when the elections in Telangana would be held, the State Election Commissioner explained that the election date could be finalized only after completion of certain formalities in this regard like dispatch and arrival of new EVMs in time, publication of electoral rolls , appointment of required electoral staff, deployment of law and order forces etc. Therefore only after completing all these required formalities, the election schedule would be announced, he added.

Meanwhile CPI leaders Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy and Narayana called on the CEC in New Delhi and expressed their strong objection to the statement of Telangana caretaker Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao’s statement that elections in Telangana would held along with four other states.

Also a petition was filed in the High Court challenging the dissolution of Telangana Assembly before its tenure for advancing the polls in the state. (NSS),
