Unseasonal rains, accompanied by thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds, have caused severe destruction to standing and harvested crops across multiple districts in Telangana. The unexpected downpour over the last few days has left farmers devastated, especially those who had stored their harvested paddy at procurement centres in hopes of a timely sale.
Districts such as Mulugu, Adilabad, Nirmal, Mancherial, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Kamareddy, and Siddipet were among the worst affected. Reports indicate that heaps of paddy laid out to dry were either soaked or washed away by floodwaters, especially in villages like Shivapuram and Gogupalli of Mulugu district. In these areas, procurement centres were inundated due to the overflowing of local streams like Jeedi Vagu, submerging large quantities of harvested grain.
In Mancherial, the scene was equally grim. Farmers who had endured six seasons of hard work were reduced to tears, witnessing their carefully harvested paddy soaked and infested by pests. The delay in procurement and poor storage conditions have compounded their losses, with weighed paddy bags left unattended for over 10 days.

“Just when we were about to sell our harvest, everything was destroyed. This was our only source of income,” lamented a farmer from Mancherial. Many are now pleading with local MLA Vivek Venkataswamy to ensure that every grain of paddy is procured and compensated.
The situation in Eturunagaram Mandal of Mulugu was particularly severe, where a torrential downpour early Wednesday flooded procurement centres and paddy fields alike. Floodwater surrounded dried paddy heaps and washed away crops laid out over approximately 200 acres, leaving behind a trail of destruction.
Farmers are blaming the delay in procurement and poor handling at centres for exacerbating their plight. With no contingency measures in place and no shelters to protect harvested grain, the sudden weather change has turned into an economic disaster for rural families.
Agriculture officials are currently assessing the damage, and appeals for compensation have started to pour in. Many farmer groups and local leaders are urging the Telangana State Government to declare a crop loss emergency and extend immediate financial and procurement support to the affected families.
