UPI Apps Halt Power Bill Payments for TGSPDCL

Effective July 1, 2024, numerous Third Party Application Providers (TPAPs) have ceased their bill payment services for Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) consumers. Complying with the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) directives, service providers including PhonePe, Paytm, Amazon Pay, Google Pay, and various banks have stopped accepting electricity bill payments for TGSPDCL from the specified date.

Consumers have been directed to make their monthly electricity payments exclusively through the official TGSPDCL website, www.tgsouthernpower.org, or the TGSPDCL Mobile App.

Public reaction indicates that the cessation of these services is due to TGSPDCL’s failure to sign up for the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS). The RBI had mandated all entities to join the BBPS by June 30, 2024. Sumiran Komaraj, the in-charge of Social Media for BJP Telangana, highlighted, “As TGSPDCL has not complied by registering with BBPS, they will no longer be able to accept payments through these payment apps from July 1, 2024. The Government of Telangana must act immediately to reinstate UPI payments and prevent public inconvenience.”

The call for immediate action from the government emphasizes the urgency to register TGSPDCL with the BBPS to restore the convenience of UPI payments for the public and mitigate any further inconvenience.
