Autos continue to use old CNG and LPG kits, posing a threat: Hyderabad

Though the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is considering allowing the retrofitting of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) kits for Bharat Stage VI (BS6) vehicles, thousands of auto-rickshaws on the road do not meet the Centre’s standards.

While drivers are unconcerned about replacing or recalibrating the existing kits, which cost more than ‘15,000, the Road Transport Authority (RTA), which is in charge of enforcing norms, has yet to address this defiance, even as activists warn of the looming danger.

Over one lakh automobiles operate within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) boundaries, with at least 90% of them running on CNG or LPG. In the last two decades, most auto-rickshaws have switched to gas as fuel, as mandated by authorities such as the State Pollution Control Board.

Previously, the RTA was warned by the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) in 2018 and served with notices to conduct tests.

Regardless, the condition of gas kits is not a top priority. For example, on Wednesday, auto drivers waiting in line for a fitness test at the RTA office in Trimulgherry (North Zone) informed officials that they did not have documents pertaining to the gas kit and that officials were only looking for other documents.

CNG kits have a three-year service period and LPG kits have a five-year service period, but not every auto driver produces the documents. There is a validity period and provision for recalibration by the company to ensure safety. In the event of leaks after the validity period has expired, there is a risk of explosion, an official stated.

Over a million people live in the city, Over one lakh automobiles operate within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) boundaries, with at least 90% of them running on CNG or LPG.
