US President Joe Biden Approves Short-Term Funding Bill; Avoids Partial Shutdown

As per the latest reports, US President Joe Biden has signed a short-term funding bill that will keep the federal government running until February 2022. Thus, avoiding a partial shutdown.

Both Chambers Of Congress Agree To Run Until February 

Biden on Friday said that funding the government isn’t an achievement. It is a basic necessity that needs to be get done. He said that during these trying times, bipartisan cooperation is “worth recognition”.

He urged Congress to use the time the bill provides to work towards a bipartisan agreement on a full-year funding bill.

This comes after, both chambers of Congress on Thursday passed a bill to keep the Federal government open until February 18, 2022 – a day before the previous government funding was set to expire.

Lawmakers Struggle To Reach Agreement 

In the past couple of years, Lawmakers have been constantly struggling to reach an agreement on government spending. In September, the US Congress passed a stopgap measure to fund the government until December 3.

Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget – US watchdog group said, this is the 25th year in a row that the Congress hasn’t passed appropriation bills on time which is unacceptable. The leaders of the cannot even fulfill the basic function of government.

MacGuineas further said when the leaders finally agree on appropriations for the fiscal year, they should do so to extend the discretionary budget caps. With the high inflation rates and the debt at record levels, more deficit-financed spending isn’t something that the government needs at this point.
