West Bengal Police have arrested more than 110 individuals in connection with the recent violence that erupted in the Muslim-majority Murshidabad district during protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act. The unrest, marked by incidents of arson, stone-pelting, and road blockades, also spread to parts of Malda, South 24 Parganas, and Hooghly districts.
According to officials, 70 arrests were made in Suti and 41 in Samserganj alone. Raids are ongoing across the affected districts. While the situation remained tense on Saturday morning, no new incidents of violence were reported.
In response to the unrest, prohibitory orders have been imposed, and internet services have been suspended in Murshidabad—the epicenter of the violence. “Patrolling continues in the Suti and Samserganj areas. We are preventing any gatherings and will not tolerate any attempts to disrupt law and order,” a senior police official said, urging the public not to fall for misleading information circulating on social media.
