Viral Video Sparks Debate on Mumbai’s Infrastructure as Commuters Walk on Railway Tracks

A video of commuters walking on railway tracks amid heavy rainfall in Mumbai has gone viral, prompting widespread discussion on social media, including a notable reaction from filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri. The footage, shared widely on X, shows passengers trekking along the tracks with their office bags after a local train service was disrupted.

The incident occurred on July 24 when a bamboo structure fell onto an overhead wire between Sion and Matunga stations, halting the fast train service. The video captures commuters navigating the tracks in a bid to reach their workplaces, highlighting the severe impact of the service failure.

Vivek Agnihotri, known for his outspoken views, shared the video with a critique on X, stating, “Mumbaikars walking on railway tracks to reach their office due to failure of local train service. Just ask a simple question: Can you even imagine torture of citizens like this in any civilised country?”

The video has garnered over a million views, sparking a heated debate about commuter safety and infrastructure reliability. Social media users voiced their concerns, with one commenting, “This is so unsafe and irresponsible behavior. They could have used the road for walking. Railway tracks are not meant for pedestrian use. Railways also hold responsibility. No proper maintenance and why is there no railway police to prevent such incidents?”

Another user suggested a novel solution, saying, “The government should introduce separate tickets for walking on railway lines.” A third user expressed frustration with broader issues, stating, “Our infrastructure is the worst and everybody is busy in appeasement politics.”

The incident underscores ongoing concerns about Mumbai’s public transport infrastructure and the need for effective measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The railway authorities are yet to comment on the situation or outline steps to address the disruption and improve safety for commuters.
