Waqf Bill Among Key Legislations on Government’s Agenda for Parliament’s Budget Session

The Budget session of Parliament is set to begin on Friday, with the government outlining its legislative agenda, including the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024. The session will start with President Droupadi Murmu addressing a joint sitting of both Houses, followed by the tabling of the Economic Survey. This will precede the Union Budget presentation scheduled for Saturday.

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill is among the key pieces of legislation the government aims to push through during the session. However, opposition parties are expected to raise several issues, including the ongoing concerns over price rise and rising unemployment.

During an all-party meeting convened by the government, Congress leader Pramod Tiwari accused the ruling BJP government of economic mismanagement, claiming that the government is systematically undermining constitutional values. Tiwari also expressed concerns over the Kumbh Mela incident and alleged disrespect to the legacy of prominent leaders like Babasaheb Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi. “We are seeing that now the date of independence of the country is also being changed by the Chief of the RSS,” Tiwari said.

Tiwari also criticized the government’s handling of the One Nation One Election committee, alleging that the opposition was being sidelined with fewer representatives on the panel. Additionally, he pointed out that the government has failed to address critical issues in states like Manipur, while also claiming that the economy is in distress.

Meanwhile, BJD MP Sasmit Patra highlighted that the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) will strongly advocate for the long-standing demand of special category status for Odisha. This issue, according to Patra, was discussed in the all-party meeting with Party President Naveen Patnaik directing the BJD parliamentary party to press for the demand. The issue of special category status was also part of the BJP’s 2014 election manifesto.

As Parliament prepares for the start of the Budget session, tensions are high, with both the ruling and opposition parties gearing up for a series of debates and discussions. The government’s focus on key legislative measures such as the Waqf Bill will be closely watched, with opposition parties poised to make their concerns known.
