Telangana to permanently fix drinking water issues

In order to permanently solve the drinking water shortage in Greater Hyderabad and nearby municipalities, the government of Telangana plans to bring Godavari river water to Hyderabad from the Kondapochamma Sagar and Mallanna Sagar reservoirs.

As part of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation scheme, the two reservoirs were constructed. This is believed to be the world’s largest lift irrigation project.

Presently, Ramagundam and Sunkishala supply water to the Telangana state capital and surrounding municipalities.

The minister for municipal administration, K. T. Rama Rao, said the construction of Kondapochamma Sagar and Mallanna Sagar reservoirs brought Godavari water closer to the city through the Kaleshwaram project.

The Chief Minister, K. Chandrasekhar Rao, who is developing long-term plans to provide drinking water to Hyderabad and the surrounding municipalities until 2051, is planning to draw water from Kondapochamma Sagar to Gandipet (Osman Sagar lake), one of the oldest sources of drinking water in the city.

Rama Rao indicated that Kondapochamma Sagar is 612 metres above sea level whereas Hyderabad is 535 metres. If water could be brought in from there by gravity, Hyderabad would have an abundant supply of water to meet all its future needs, he said.

He laid the foundation stone for the Outer Ring Road (ORR) Phase-II drinking water supply scheme in Alkapoor Township, Manikonda.

As part of the project, 980 colonies and gated communities within ORR’s jurisdiction will receive drinking water at a cost of Rs 1,200 crore.

Water has already been provided to 190 villages in the ORR beyond Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits at a cost of Rs.775 crore, by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB).
