WhatsApp Scammers Impersonate Officials in Recent Cybercrimes

Cybercriminals are trying again to trick people, and this time they are using N Swetha, the commissioner of Siddipet police, as their WhatsApp display photo.

The con artists demanded an urgent transfer of Rs 30,000 over a phone number, 9934941611, claiming to refund the money in an hour.

In response, the police commissioner of Siddipet asked the people to exercise caution and ignore communications received from this number. The public has been cautioned not to fall for the scam and pay money to the con artists. The issue has been submitted to the cybercrime wing for additional investigation.

In another example, cybercriminals robbed a prominent journalist, Bandi Srinivas Raghuveer, the chairman of a news station, of Rs 49,999. He received a phone call from an unknown number in which the caller pretended to be a bank executive and claimed that the funds were required to link his PAN card to his bank account. If he did not comply, the fraudsters threatened to cancel his account.

Following this exchange, Srinivas received a link, which he clicked on. He received an OTP and shared it with the caller upon request. Following that, Rs 49,999 was withdrawn from Srinivas’s account.

Srinivas reported the incident to Panjagutta police, who are now looking into it. This incident serves as a reminder to be cautious and not give critical information or click on dubious sites, particularly in response to unwanted phone or online solicitations.
