Woman Cuts Cake Inside Kaal Bhairav Mandir, Sparks Outrage

A 39-second video of a woman cutting a cake inside the revered Kaal Bhairav Mandir in Varanasi has gone viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage among devotees and locals. The video shows the woman performing the act in front of the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, an act that many consider disrespectful to the sanctity of the site.

Reportedly, the woman visited the temple last Friday to celebrate her birthday. After performing a ritual puja, she proceeded to cut a cake within the temple premises and recorded a video that has since been widely circulated online.

The incident has drawn sharp criticism from devotees and organizations like the Kashi Vidwat Parishad, which has condemned the act as a violation of religious norms. “Such behavior in front of Kashi’s Kotwal (a title for Kaal Bhairav, the guardian deity of Varanasi) is unacceptable and deeply regrettable,” said devotees in their reactions.

The temple authorities have also come under scrutiny for their alleged inaction. The viral video shows the woman cutting the cake in the presence of temple priests and staff, who did not stop her. However, the temple’s mahant has stated that efforts were made to dissuade the woman and her companions, but they refused to comply.

In response to the uproar, the Kashi Vidwat Parishad, a prominent religious council, has decided to issue a formal notice to the temple’s mahant. Ram Narayan Dwivedi, the Parishad’s general secretary, stated, “This act is not only inappropriate but also goes against classical religious laws. We will be sending a notice to the mahant, seeking an explanation for the lapse in maintaining decorum.”

The incident has prompted discussions about imposing stricter rules within temple premises. The temple administration is now considering a ban on photography and video recording to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The controversy highlights the growing tension between modern celebratory practices and traditional religious norms, raising questions about the balance between personal expression and respect for sacred spaces.
