Chicken Prices Decline in Telangana

The prices of chicken in the state have begun to decline after a period of significant escalation, thanks to the onset of the Telugu auspicious month of Shravanam. The change in pricing trends follows a steep increase in chicken costs over the past month, which had made the poultry product largely unaffordable for many middle and lower-middle-class families.

In July, chicken prices soared to an all-time high, reaching Rs 280 per kilogram. This spike in prices led to a noticeable drop in chicken consumption among the general public, who only purchased the meat for special occasions or festive events. Many households refrained from buying chicken due to its prohibitive cost, opting instead for more affordable alternatives.

However, with the arrival of August and the beginning of Shravanam, a period marked by various religious observances and special pujas, chicken prices have started to ease. On August 11, the price of chicken was recorded at Rs 150 per kilogram, a significant drop from Rs 180 per kilogram on August 5. Despite a minor increase to Rs 158 per kilogram on August 17, the overall trend has been downward.

The decline in prices is attributed to the decreased demand for chicken during Shravanam. Traditionally, this month is observed with various pujas and religious rituals, during which many women encourage their families to abstain from consuming meat. This reduction in demand has led to a corresponding drop in prices as suppliers adjust to the lower consumption rates.

Experts suggest that the high prices of chicken, coupled with the reduced demand during the auspicious period, have prompted the market to stabilize. The decreased prices are expected to make chicken more accessible to the general public once again, especially as the festive season approaches.

The fluctuation in chicken prices highlights the influence of cultural and religious practices on market dynamics. As consumers navigate the changing economic landscape, the current trend offers a temporary relief to those who had been affected by the soaring costs in recent months.
