70% of power consumers in Hyderabad tamper with electricity metres

The Charminar zone is the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Corporation Limited’s largest consumer, with 6.3 lakh customers (TSSPDCL). It has the highest percentage of instances involving tampering with power metres.

It has also had the largest amount of electrical thefts and is still owed Rs 52 crore in overdue payments and power theft, among other things. According to TSSPDC officials, around 70% of consumers engage in metre tampering and false metre readings.

The home category accounts for 80% of consumers in the Charminar zone, followed by the industrial and commercial sectors. Charminar, Aramgarh, and Begum Bazaar are all part of it.

The Deccan Chronicle quoted a government official as saying, “Our vigilance teams have launched rigorous search operations to detect similar situations.” “We undertake surprise checks, file cases against power theft and tampering, and penalise persons in accordance with the TSSPDCL Violation Act,” he continued.

In TS, the power tariff could rise by 50 paise per unit

After the TS Electricity Regulatory Commission (ERC) completed its public hearings on Friday, the state’s electricity tariff is scheduled to rise after a five-year hiatus. The rate increase is expected to take effect on April 1.

The state government informed the ERC that it will provide the required financial support to the Discoms, which recommended a 50-paise-per-unit increase for domestic consumers and a Re 1 increase for HT consumers. After a 19-year hiatus, the Discoms have requested a rate increase for domestic consumers in the 1-50 unit category, from Rs 1.45 per unit to Rs 1.95 per unit.

Overall, the Discoms anticipate an additional revenue of Rs 6,831 crore from tariff increases in 2018.

From 1.54 crore customers in 2022-23. The ERC will publish the actual rate increase in the near future. T Sriranga Rao, chairman of the ERC, held a public hearing on the tariff hike here on Friday.

TSSPDCL chairman and MC G Raghuma Reddy explained the Discoms’ financial situation, saying that after the State government’s subsidy, the Discoms would be in a deficit of Rs 2,686 crore, which would be recovered through internal efficiency measures such as reducing transmission losses and spending on human resources.

According to Raghuma Reddy, they predict a 4% reduction in agricultural power requirements as canal irrigation improves and the groundwater table recharges. Because of the rise in groundwater levels, the operation of agricultural motors has been curtailed to five hours per day from ten hours previously, he noted.

M Leela Kumari of the Energy Department, addressing on behalf of the State government, stated that the Discoms were operating admirably and that installed capacity had increased to 17,182 MW from 7,777 MW in 2014.

She stated that the government contributed Rs 9,161 crore to the Discoms over the budget allocated from 2016-17 to 2020-21. The government is dedicated to provide Discoms with the necessary financial support, she said.
