“Accept and recognize Taliban through patience and engagement”- Pakistan to world

The Taliban, which is back in power in Afghanistan after a rapid turn of events, has to be officially recognized as the rulers of Afghanistan, Pakistan told in a press briefing.

The right approach to deal with the Taliban would be to show patience, engage and not isolate, the Pakistani Foreign Minister said.

The proposal to recognize the Taliban was made by Pakistan as it mentioned that the world leaders should have discussions with the armed group’s heads, along with incentives provision if they fulfil the requirements.

This was presented on Wednesday during an interview with The Associated Press over the meeting of top global leaders in the UN General Assembly.

“If they live up to those expectations, they would make it easier for themselves, they will get acceptability, which is required for recognition,” the minister said.

“At the same time, the international community has to realise: What is the alternative? What are the options? This is the reality, and can they turn away from this reality?” he questioned.

Defying the speculations calling Pakistan a supporter of the Taliban, Mr Qureshi said that Pakistan wants a peaceful and stabilized Afghanistan as it is “in sync with the international community” for the same. They hope that the region doesn’t cultivate or gets used for terrorist activities, he said.

However, it is essential to “be more realistic in your approach”, he said. This can be done by creating an “innovative way of engaging with them (Taliban). The way that they were being dealt with has not worked.”

Equality, including assurances for the protection of human rights, more precisely for women and girls can be the expectation set from the Taliban government, he said.

To make the Taliban do this, world forces can lend development, economic and reconstruction resources to assist the country in retrieving its previous era, before wars destructed Afghanistan.

As Afghan funds have been frozen by the US, the International Monetary Fund and other nations in view of the terrorist tag given to the Taliban, the minister urged them to release the funds immediately as that can be utilized to “promote normalcy in Afghanistan”.

While the world is following the opposite suit, he pledged that Pakistan’s role in the Taliban ruckus would be to have a “constructive and positive” shoulder in creating contact with the armed group.

The comments and suggestions were a repercussion of the rules imposed by the Taliban, witnessed during their previous rule during the term 1996-2001.
