Actress Sowmya Accuses Director of Grooming Her as a Sex Slave

The Malayalam film industry is in turmoil following a series of sexual abuse allegations, with Tamil actress Sowmya making startling revelations about her early career. In a recent interview , Sowmya, who appeared in three Malayalam films and one Tamil movie during the 1990s, shared her traumatic experiences of sexual exploitation.

Sowmya, now 18 years old at the time, was approached by a prominent Malayalam film director and his wife. Describing the situation, Sowmya stated that the couple initially presented themselves as family friends, providing her with care and attention. However, their seemingly benevolent demeanor masked a sinister agenda.

According to Sowmya, the director began to display inappropriate behavior, eventually expressing a desire to have a child with her. Despite her family’s initial reluctance, they were persuaded to support her acting career after significant financial investments in her screen tests. This support came at a heavy price, as Sowmya soon found herself trapped in a disturbing situation.

In her harrowing account, Sowmya recounted how the director used a manipulative grooming process, which involved offering her good food and milkshakes. This period of apparent kindness gradually led to more severe misconduct. Sowmya detailed an incident where the director kissed her while his wife was absent. Feeling paralyzed and ashamed, she chose to remain silent about the assault, continuing her dance rehearsals as the situation escalated.

The abuse, which lasted for nearly a year while she was in college, culminated in rape. Sowmya described how the director exploited her vulnerability, using her body to his advantage. Despite the ongoing abuse, she felt isolated and unable to seek help due to her sense of shame.

Sowmya has expressed her intention to reveal the director’s identity to the special police team formed by the Kerala government, which is investigating similar allegations following the release of the Justice Hema Committee report last month. The report has triggered a wave of accusations against senior Malayalam film actors and directors, shedding light on a systemic issue of sexual misconduct within the industry.

The revelations by Sowmya add to the growing list of allegations, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive reform and accountability within the Malayalam film industry. As the investigation progresses, it remains to be seen how these disclosures will impact the industry and whether they will lead to meaningful changes in addressing sexual harassment and abuse.
