Addressing the Needs of Telangana’s Muslim Community: Beyond Cemetery Space

The Telangana administration is under fire for allegedly ignoring the Muslim community’s concerns and neglecting to meet their broader needs. According to Abdul Rawoof, a minority rights activist, the government’s recent pronouncements have mostly concentrated on giving cemetery space for Muslims, implying that their needs end with burial. Rawoof emphasises that Muslims in Telangana have obstacles in industries, trade, education, and the economy, and that their goals extend beyond graveyard land.

Rawoof highlights Muslims’ exclusion from schemes such as “Dalit Bandhu” and “BC Bandhu,” which provide financial aid to marginalised communities. While Dalits and other backward castes benefit from these measures, Muslims in the BC-E category are excluded. Rawoof is disappointed by this exclusion and emphasises the importance of Muslims having equal opportunities for growth and development.

Syed Omar Jaleel’s reappointment as Secretary of the Minority Welfare Department is considered as a step towards improving the department’s performance. Under Jaleel’s leadership, it is hoped that the department will prioritise the development of programmes that actually help the Muslim community.

Rawoof also underlines the neglect of bank loans through the Telangana State Minority Finance Corporation, which has denied financial aid to many Muslims. He asks the government to develop a plan for Muslims, similar to “Dalit Bandhu” and “BC Bandhu,” to give much-needed financial assistance and empower members of the community.

The activist urges the government to recognise the Muslim community’s numerous demands outside of graveyard property and to take meaningful efforts to address their concerns in areas such as education, employment, and entrepreneurship. Equality and fair opportunity for all communities are critical for Telangana’s overall growth.
