After Hijab row, the gun turned on Sikh turban in Bangaluru

It goes without saying that the Hijab row has now turned into turban controversy as a Sikh Girl student in a college at Bangalure was barred from entering the classroom for wearing turban – a religious obligation being observed by every Amritdhari irrespective of gender in the Sikh community.

According to reports, a Sikh Girl student of Mount Carmel PU College in Bangalure, who came to college wearing a turban after becoming Amritdhari (Baptised as per religious practice),  was told to remove her head cover to join other students.

It is said that the college management of Mount Carmel PU College asked a 17 year old Sikh girl student to remove her turban as they have to adhere to the orders issued by the Karnataka High Court. However the girl has declined to remove the head cover citing it is her religious obligation.

Later, when the Deputy Director of the PU College G.Sriram turned up to explain that no students are allowed to enter the campus with hijab, the students held a protest against his dictate and demanded that other students wearing their religious symbols in the classroom too should be barred from entering the campus.

It is said the authorities have even informed the parents about their decision through mail.

On learning the same, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) condemned the incident and shot up a letter to Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai raising concern over the issue.

The incident evoked a strong reaction even from Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). While seeking an intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the issue, the Committee President Harjinder Singh Dhami said, “It is unacceptable to see the Sikh community are forced to take their turbans off in their own country. This is completely an unconstitutional move which is not at all acceptable. Wearing a turban is a part of principles of Sikh religion and forcing anyone from the community to remove it is tantamount to a violation of such religious customs,” he asserted.

He demanded the Karnataka Government to bring the perpetrators of this heinous act to justice.

Already the Hijab row grappled the country into communal fervour where more number of incidents of barring Hijab wearing girls from entering into schools, colleges and even banks are reported from several parts of the country outraging the Muslim community and now the turban row brought into picture only to provoke Sikh community.
