Air India Suspends Tel Aviv Flights Amid Middle East Tensions

Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, Air India has announced the suspension of all flight operations to and from Tel Aviv until August 8.

In an official statement released on X, the airline said, “In view of the ongoing situation in parts of the Middle East, we have suspended scheduled operation of our flights to and from Tel Aviv with immediate effect up to and including 08 August 2024.

We are continuously monitoring the situation and are extending support to our passengers with confirmed bookings for travel to and from Tel Aviv during this period, with a one-time waiver on rescheduling and cancellation charges. Safety of our guests and crew remains our foremost priority.”

The Middle East region has been fraught with tension, with Israel and Iran at the center of a long-standing rivalry. Iran supports groups like Hezbollah, which opposes Israel and Western powers.

The region has been particularly volatile since Israel and the Iran-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah began exchanging fire on October 8 last year. This escalation followed an attack by the Palestinian militant group Hamas on communities in southern Israel, sparking the Gaza war.

The most recent attack occurred on Wednesday when the Shiite Islamic militant group Hezbollah announced that its senior commander Fuad Shukr was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut.

Other Iran-backed groups in the region have also been active. Yemen-based Houthis attacked Western ships passing through the Red Sea earlier this year, pledging allegiance to the Palestinian cause and causing significant disruptions in global trade.

Air India’s decision to suspend flights is a precautionary measure in response to the heightened risk and instability in the region. The airline is prioritizing the safety of its passengers and crew while offering flexible options for those affected by the suspension.

As the situation continues to develop, Air India and other international airlines are closely monitoring the conflict and adjusting their operations accordingly to ensure the safety and security of their flights and passengers.
