Amazon Aims To Bridge Digital Divide For Marginalised Communities In India With “Delivering Smiles”

In the bid the support the marginalised communities, Amazon India on Tuesday announced a new initiative “Delivering Smiles”. Under this, the company will directly involve themselves in giving and facilitating the contribution of digital devices like mobiles and laptops to the students and youth from marginalised communities.

Amazon To Distribute 20,000 New Digital Devices

As per the latest reports, the initiative comes as a way to bridge the digital divide in the country. The aim is to increase the accessibility of the digital devices for the students from the underprivileged communities and empower them for the future.

The company will provide 20,000 digital devices to the underprivileged young people and partner with over 150 large and small NGOs. This would impact around 100,000 students across the country, the company said in a released statement.

Furthermore, the company also encourages the customers to either contribute in cash via Amazon Pay or donate their old devices especially mobile phones and laptops. The products will be refurbished and distributed to increase digital learning across the young people in the country.

Amazon Aims To Bridge Digital Divide 

Manish Tiwary, Vice President of Amazon India said in a statement that the Covid 19 pandemic has brought a lot of focus on bettering the digital divide across the country. And this not only includes the field of education and also in the essential services. And amongst the most adversely affected are the young people from the marginalised sections.

He added that with together with their customers, employees and partners, they aim to bridge the gap between enabling young people with access to the digital devices.

Meanwhile, the cash contribution from the customers is enabled in partnership between Amazon Pay and GiveIndia. The proceed from the same will be used to purchase new devices, data cards and digital accessories for the students.
The old devices will be picked by Cashify, who will then refurbish it and donate it to Goonj.
