“America First” Policy: A Disastrous Path for Global Relations

The “America First” policy championed by President Donald Trump has led to a series of actions that are not only disruptive to international relations but also pose significant threats to global climate stability and the environment. Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accord, coupled with a series of aggressive domestic policies prioritizing short-term energy gains over long-term sustainability, paints a worrying picture of his legacy.

One of the most glaring consequences of Trump’s policy has been his dismissal of climate science in favor of domestic drilling and exploration. The decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord, which aimed to limit global temperature rise and mitigate climate change, came at a time when the United States was already grappling with the devastating effects of extreme weather. The 2024 hurricane season, one of the deadliest in U.S. history, led to at least 335 deaths, widespread property damage, and power outages. Similarly, 2025 witnessed catastrophic wildfires in Los Angeles, fueled by dry conditions and strong winds, killing at least 25 people and displacing thousands. These natural disasters are direct reminders that climate change is real, and yet, Trump has stubbornly ignored the pressing need for collective climate action.

Instead of seeking solutions to mitigate the worsening climate crisis, Trump’s administration has chosen to prioritize domestic energy production through controversial measures, including lifting bans on drilling in ecologically sensitive areas like the Arctic. The lifting of the prohibition on drilling in Alaska’s Polar Bear Wildlife Sanctuary risks not only the extinction of vulnerable species but also accelerates the melting of ice in the region, leading to rising sea levels. This short-sighted approach, aimed at cutting energy costs and reducing inflation, will undoubtedly exacerbate the very climate problems that the U.S. is already facing.

Trump’s “America First” ideology has also led to troubling foreign policy moves. His attempts to purchase Greenland from Denmark and take control of the Panama Canal reflect a narrow, self-interested vision of global relations. Both actions stem from his desire to counter China’s growing influence in critical trade routes and resources. However, these actions are fraught with risks, from the environmental impact of exploiting Greenland’s rare minerals to the geopolitical ramifications of alienating neighboring countries.

Additionally, Trump’s tariffs on key trade partners like Canada, Mexico, China, and Brazil have strained international trade relations, threatening to escalate into full-blown trade wars that would harm the global economy, particularly developing nations. His decision to force two million federal workers to resign or face termination if they do not align with his political agenda is another indication of his disregard for established norms and the welfare of everyday Americans.

Perhaps the most concerning aspect of Trump’s “America First” approach is the human cost. His aggressive deportation policies, including raids on religious places like Gurudwaras, have created fear and division within the U.S. This, coupled with the expansion of detention facilities in Guantanamo Bay, raises questions about the administration’s commitment to human rights and civil liberties.

Trump’s vision of America as a self-contained, isolationist superpower neglects the interconnectedness of global issues. From climate change to international trade, no country can afford to operate in a vacuum. His policies not only fail to address the urgent challenges of our time but also jeopardize the stability of the planet and the U.S.’s standing in the world. The legacy of “America First” is one of missed opportunities, environmental destruction, and growing global instability. It’s time for the U.S. to abandon this narrow vision and embrace policies that prioritize the health of our planet and the well-being of all nations.
