Angry over her social media post, live-in partner sets woman on fire

Social media became the triggering factor for a woman’s murder after her partner allegedly lit her on fire due to it.

A 28-year-old woman died of her burns in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram Medical College on Thursday because of the fire ignited by her live-in boyfriend who was angry over her social media post.

The incident took place on Tuesday evening in Anchal of Kollam after Shanavaz, the accused, got into an argument with Athira, the victim, due to social media posts. Athira used to share videos and images on social media, much to the anger of her 30-year-old partner.

Opposing one of her social media posts, Shanavaz, drenched her in kerosene and lit her, according to the complaint filed by Athira’s mother.

As per the police, the discord over the video appears to be the reason behind the murder. The police official in charge of Anchal station, Saiju Nath, said, “The two were having heated arguments over a video that Athira had posted on social media. According to Athira’s mother’s complaint, Shanavaz allegedly poured kerosene over her and set her on fire with a lighter.”

The incident was brought to light after the couple’s neighbours heard Athira’s screams and rushed to her home to rescue her. She was hurriedly taken to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College on Tuesday night in an ambulance. The doctor proclaimed her to be dead on Thursday after she succumbed to her burns.

The accused, Shanavaz, had also suffered burns during the brawl. He is currently in the ICU receiving treatment for the injuries for the episode that happened about an hour away from Kerala’s capital city. The incident left him with 40 per cent burns.

Athira’s mother lodged a complaint against her daughter’s live-in partner and a case of murder has been filed. Investigation pertaining to the same is underway, cops said.

The couple, Athira and Shanavaz, were in a live-in relationship and been together from 2 years. The two share a three months old baby, the police added.
