Annapurna Food Scheme proves to be huge success in Hyderabad

Since its inception in 2014, the Telangana government’s flagship ‘Annapurna Food Scheme’ has served a whopping 10.45 crore meals within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits.

The Annapurna Food Scheme, in accordance with Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao’s directive to ensure that no one goes hungry, provides affordable and hygienic food comprising rice (400 gms), sambar (120 gms), curry (100 gms), and pickle (15 gms) to people from all walks of life for a nominal charge of Rs 5.

According to GHMC data, the scheme currently serves approximately 30,000 meals per day in the city. Not only do daily wage workers benefit from one of the largest public feeding programs in the country, many students, cab/auto drivers, private employees, security guards, etc. are also dependent on it.

In recent times, the authorities have made efforts to improve the amenities at the Rs 5 meal centers, and seating comfort has also been created in some places.

The Annapurna Canteen in Madhapur, which has seating arrangements, is one such example, where several employees regularly eat lunch. Similarly, many construction workers, security guards, and students staying in hostels enjoy their meals at the Annapurna Centre in Gachibowli’s Anjaiah Nagar.

During the lockdowns imposed to contain the spread of Covid-19, the Annapurna Food Scheme, which has become a huge hit among the urban poor, was a lifeline for the needy. During those trying times, the Telangana government provided Annapurna meals for free and also increased the number of meals served by multiple folds and served dinner in addition to lunch.

The GHMC limits currently have 150 locations that offer the Rs 5 meal, and the authorities has proposed to create seating arrangements at 32 locations, of which 15 have already been prepared.
