What is Hajj?
The Haj, sometimes called Hajj, is an annual pilgrimage to Mecca that Muslims must do at least once in their lifetimes. The Arabic term Haj means “to intend a travel.”
Along with shahadah (statement of faith), salat (daily prayer), zakat (almsgiving), and sawm, Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam (fasting in Ramadan).
Adult Muslims are required to perform Hajj at least once throughout their lifetime. They must be in good mental and physical health, as well as financially and physically capable of making the travel. Those who complete the journey receive the title Hajji.
The pilgrimage takes place in the final month of the Islamic calendar, Dhul-Hajj. The Hajj ceremonies are performed from the 8th to the 12th of the month.
