Asaduddin Owaisi Criticizes Modi Government’s Decision to Lift Ban on RSS

Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi sharply criticized the Narendra Modi-led government on Monday following its decision to lift a long-standing ban on government employees associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The ban, which had been in place since 1966, was removed through a recent government memo. Owaisi denounced the move as a threat to India’s integrity and unity.

The official order stated: “It has been decided to remove the mention of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) from the impugned OMs dated 30.11.1966, 25.07.1970, and 28.10.1980.” This memo effectively lifts restrictions on government employees participating in RSS activities.

Owaisi condemned the decision, arguing that the RSS was originally banned for its opposition to the Indian Constitution, the national flag, and the national anthem. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he stated, “This office memo purportedly shows that the government has lifted the ban on government employees participating in RSS activities. If true, this is against India’s integrity and unity.

The ban on RSS exists because it had originally refused to accept the constitution, the national flag, and the national anthem.” The AIMIM chief further criticized the RSS’s ideology, noting that the organization’s oath places Hindutva above the nation. He asserted, “Every RSS member takes an oath that puts Hindutva above the nation. No civil servant can be loyal to the nation if he is a member of RSS.”

In response, BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya claimed that the original ban on the RSS was imposed following an anti-cow-slaughter protest outside Parliament on November 7, 1966, during which police firing resulted in numerous deaths. Malviya wrote, “On 30 Nov 1966, shaken by the RSS-Jana Sangh clout, Indira Gandhi banned govt staff from joining the RSS.”

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh also opposed the decision, recalling that Sardar Patel had initially banned the RSS in February 1948 after Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination, amid concerns that Gandhi’s assassin, Nathuram Godse, had links with the RSS. Ramesh added, “Sardar Patel had banned the RSS in February 1948 following Gandhi ji’s assassination. Subsequently, the ban was withdrawn on assurances of good behavior. Even after this, the RSS never flew the Tiranga in Nagpur.”
