Hyderabadis are citizens and not the property of political parties : Asaduddin Owaisi

In a sharp answer to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remark about Hyderabad being ‘on lease’ to the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), party leader Asaduddin Owaisi responded, asserting that the people of Hyderabad are citizens and not the property of political parties.

During his speech on Wednesday, Prime Minister Modi accused the Congress and BRS of giving Hyderabad to AIMIM on ‘lease’ for years. He stated, “For all these years, both these parties have handed Hyderabad to AIMIM on lease. If someone has challenged AIMIM for the first time, it’s BJP. More than AIMIM, it’s Congress and BRS who are perturbed by the challenge from the BJP. Both are aiding AIMIM to secure victories in Hyderabad.”

Responding on X, Owaisi wrote, “Modi visited Telangana and claimed that Hyderabad was leased to Owaisi. The people of Hyderabad are not cattle. We are citizens, not the property of political parties. For 40 years, Hyderabad has resisted Hindutva ideology and supported AIMIM. Inshallah, Hindutva will be defeated again.”

Owaisi shifted the focus to the issue of political funding, asserting, “Modi is beholden to those who donated Rs 6,000 crore to his party through electoral bonds. In exchange, he has sold India’s assets to his sponsors.”

He added, “Modi has indulged them so much that 21 individuals now possess more wealth than 70 crore Indians combined. Those 21 are his real family.” In a conversation with ANI earlier, the AIMIM chief accused PM Modi of frustration and emphasized how AIMIM has consistently defeated the BJP for 40 years.

“We have been defeating the BJP for 40 years…PM Modi campaigned here in 2014 and 2019, but AIMIM won. I ask PM Modi, where is the money for PM CARE funds, and which bank holds the electoral bond money?…Unemployment and inflation are on the rise…This year, PM Modi seeks to amend the constitution to end reservations. He accuses us of being infiltrators and our daughters of having many children. This is false. Will a Muslim remove the ‘Mangalsutra’ from a Hindu woman? The Prime Minister is clearly frustrated,” Owaisi added.

Madhavi Latha is set to challenge Asaduddin Owaisi, a four-time Lok Sabha MP from the Hyderabad constituency, marking the BJP’s first female candidate from the Hyderabad constituency.

Owaisi has served as the Member of Parliament for Hyderabad since 2004, winning four elections. Prior to him, his father Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi represented Hyderabad in Parliament from 1984. Most of the assembly seats in Hyderabad are also held by AIMIM, except for Goshamahal.

The Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency includes seven assembly segments: Bahadurpura, Chandrayangutta, Charminar, Goshamahal, Karwan, Malakpet, and Yakatpura. Voting for all 17 Telangana seats is set for May 13 in the fourth phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections. In the 2019 general elections, TRS secured nine seats, BJP won four, Congress three, and AIMIM one.
