Gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot dead on Saturday night in the presence of police personnel and media in Prayagraj.
According to eyewitnesses, the assailants came disguised as journalists, with one of them carrying a mic and an ID. As journalists questioned Atiq Ahmed about his recent questioning in police custody, he was shot in the head before he could finish his sentence.
Reportedly, the assailants shouted “surrender, surrender” and threw their firearms on the ground before fleeing the scene. The incident took place despite the presence of police and media, raising questions about the security arrangements and the attackers’ motives.
Following the incident, prohibitory orders have been imposed in Prayagraj and other communally sensitive districts. PAC and RAF teams have been deployed in Prayagraj, and the bodies of Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf have been removed from the crime scene.
Atiq Ahmed’s family has a history of criminal involvement. His eldest son Umar is currently in Lucknow jail, while his second son Ali is in Naini Central Jail, both in separate cases. His third son Asad was shot dead in an encounter in Jhansi on Thursday and buried in Prayagraj on Saturday. His wife Shaista Parveen is absconding after being named in criminal cases. The fourth son Ahjam and the youngest son Aban are housed in a juvenile home in Prayagraj.
The incident has sent shockwaves across the state, with many calling for a thorough investigation into the matter. The police have assured that they will leave no stone unturned in identifying and apprehending the culprits.
