Azharuddin Appears Before ED in Money Laundering Case Linked to HCA

Former Indian cricket team captain and Congress leader Mohammed Azharuddin appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday in connection with a money laundering case related to alleged financial irregularities within the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA), official sources revealed.

Azharuddin, who served as the president of the HCA, was called in for questioning under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The ED will be recording his statement regarding his role during his tenure as HCA president, which is under the agency’s scrutiny.

The federal agency had initially summoned the 61-year-old former Member of Parliament to appear at its office on Fateh Maidan Road on October 3. However, Azharuddin requested a fresh date and was subsequently called in on October 8.

The investigation stems from alleged financial irregularities in the Hyderabad Cricket Association, for which the ED conducted searches in November last year. Sources stated that Azharuddin’s involvement during his time as HCA president is a key focus of the ongoing probe.

Azharuddin has previously denied the allegations, stating last year that they were “false” and “motivated,” and claimed that the accusations were part of a political ploy by his rivals aimed at tarnishing his reputation. The case was initially registered by the Telangana police last year, following which the ED stepped in to investigate the financial aspects under PMLA.

Azharuddin, who also contested the state assembly elections last year unsuccessfully, has yet to make an official statement following his appearance before the ED. The investigation is expected to shed more light on the financial operations of the Hyderabad Cricket Association during his leadership.

Further developments in the case are awaited as the ED continues its probe into the financial irregularities linked to the HCA.
