The BC Welfare Association is ramping up its demands for increased reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) in the upcoming local body elections in Telangana. With a massive protest planned for March 9 in Hyderabad, the association is taking a firm stance to ensure that their call for 42% reservation for BCs is legally addressed before any elections take place.
Jajula Srinivas Goud, National President of the BC Welfare Association, has called for the elections to be postponed until the legal groundwork for the 42% reservation is established. He expressed deep dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs, labeling it as a “suppression” of BCs and vowed to intensify the protests across Telangana until their demands are met.
At a press conference held at the Somajiguda Press Club, Goud criticized the recently submitted caste census report from the dedicated commission, which the association has vehemently opposed. According to Goud, the report is riddled with inaccuracies and lacks scientific methodology, rendering it “equal to a scrap of paper.” He further argued that the report fails to accurately reflect the BC population, undermining the basis for reservation promises.

In his statement, Goud reminded the public of the Congress party’s promise to provide 42% reservation for BCs based on a caste census, as stated in the Kamareddy Declaration. “We expected the Dedicated Commission to deliver on that promise, but the state government is playing with the lives of BCs,” Goud stated. This failure, according to the association, has fueled widespread discontent among BC communities in the state.
In response to the perceived lack of progress, the BC Welfare Association has unveiled a phased protest strategy that will begin with demonstrations at Mandal and District centers across Telangana starting Wednesday, February 12. The protests will culminate in a massive “Chalo Hyderabad” rally on March 9, where thousands of BC leaders and supporters are expected to raise a “BC caste census war cry” to demand justice and recognition from the state government.
Goud also mentioned that the association had met with Minister Ponnam Prabhakar and Congress senior leader K Kesava Rao in the Secretariat to discuss the caste census data. During these discussions, flaws in the caste census report were acknowledged. However, despite assurances that the issue would be brought to the attention of the Chief Minister, the association expressed frustration over the lack of response, leading to the formal announcement of protest actions.
The BC Welfare Association is also lending its support to BC candidates running in the upcoming MLC elections, including P Ravinder (Warangal-Khammam-Nalgonda), Prasanna Harikrishna (Karimnagar-Adilabad-Nizamabad-Medak), and Komuraiah (Teachers’ Constituency), further signaling their commitment to advancing the rights and representation of BC communities.
Meanwhile, Former BC Commission Chairman Vakulabharanam Krishnamohan Rao and BC Welfare Association National Vice President Gujja Satyam have raised concerns about the “secrecy” surrounding the Dedicated Commission’s report. They have strongly condemned the Chief Minister’s apparent lack of engagement with the report and are demanding its immediate withdrawal for a comprehensive review in consultation with experts and BC associations.
Rao has warned that the association may take legal action, including approaching the Supreme Court, if the state government continues what they perceive as an “anti-BC” stance. A meeting of BC associations, led by R Krishnaiah, is also being planned to formulate further strategies for the movement.
As the situation intensifies, the BC Welfare Association’s protest actions and demands for 42% reservation for BCs remain a hot-button issue in Telangana, with both political and legal implications for the state’s governance.
