Begumpet to Balkampet Bridge Closed Due to Heavy Rainfall in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: The Begumpet-Balkampet bridge in Hyderabad has been blocked to traffic due to severe floods induced by the region’s heavy rainfall. Mayor Vijayalaxmi Gadwal personally examined the area near the bridge, which was totally immersed in water, and urged local officials to handle the water stagnation issue as soon as possible.

The mayor emphasized the need of emptying the water fast while causing as little inconvenience to the people as possible.

Citizens have been advised to travel only in times of emergency, due to the difficult road conditions created by the persistent heavy rain. Other metropolitan flyovers have also seen substantial waterlogging, worsening traffic congestion and causing commuters inconvenience.

Furthermore, the roads in the Shaikpet area near Brindavan colony have been inundated by floodwaters, making driving extremely difficult. Traffic backups at the Tolichowki flyover have been observed to extend up to nearly four kilometers, greatly disrupting everyday commute.

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) opened six crests of Osman Sagar, popularly known as Gandipet, and six gates of Himayat Sagar to handle the massive input of water. This measure resulted in the release of excess water downstream into the Musi River, which helped to alleviate part of the floods.
