BJP MLA Arrested Amid Communal Tension in Gajwel, Telangana

M. Raghunandan Rao, a BJP MLA from Hyderabad, Telangana, was held by police on Wednesday as he sought to travel to Gajwel town, where a conflict between two groups had generated communal tension.

The police stopped Rao near Hakimpet Air Force Station on the outskirts of Hyderabad and informed him that due to the current situation, he did not have permission to reach Gajwel. Despite police orders, the MLA insisted on visiting the town, which resulted in his arrest and subsequent transfer to Alwal Police Station.

Meanwhile, BJP MLA Eatala Rajender called Raghunandan Rao to express his outrage over his illegal detention. Rajender, who was just chosen chairman of the BJP’s election management committee, sought Raghunandan Rao’s immediate release. The incident in Gajwel occurred after a drunken youth urinated near a Shivaji statue. He was then thrashed by some people and paraded semi-naked before being handed over to police. Another group came to the youth’s aid and fought those who had abused him, injuring one person.

Following the clash, Gajwel was shut down on Tuesday, during which some protestors threw stones at a place of worship, aggravating tensions. The police have arrested three people in connection with the event and are looking for others. Additional security officers have been deployed in the town to preserve law and order.

The arrest of BJP MLA M. Raghunandan Rao, as well as the continued tensions in Gajwel, illustrate the fragile communal situation and the authorities’ efforts to maintain peace and order. The situation is being continuously followed, and additional actions will be taken as needed to safeguard the area’s safety and security.
