Bodies piling up, hospitals overwhelmed, crematoriums full- Govt’s deaf ear to citizens’ cries

With India recording its highest ever 2 lakh cases in just a span of 24 hours, the question remains as to what the government is doing at times of distress when its citizens need it the most. While the first wave of coronavirus should have been enough to wake the poor healthcare infrastructure from its slumber, the government seems in no mood to pay heed to the tragedies of people.

A peep outside any hospital in the majority of the states in the country can prove the havoc the virus has caused and the nil efforts of the Centre in controlling this situation. While people are also to be blamed for their carelessness given the highly contagious character of the virus, the government is witnessing itself in the dock for leaving citizens to fend for themselves.

There has been a massive uproar as hospitals are running out of bed and ventilators to spare for the dying patients, dead bodies are getting jampacked and thrown anywhere and everywhere there is space, and cremation grounds are getting dumped with more bodies than they can handle at a time.

While this was not enough, people have been transporting their infected loved ones from one hospital to another, each of those is denying to accept their admission due to the unavailability of resources. States including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and many more are stretched beyond their capacity and are left helpless.

Ambulances can be seen queuing near hospitals filled with covid 19 patients waiting to get their right to live by receiving proper treatment. However, many of these patients are dying in the ambulances itself as hospitals are running out of beds. Not just beds, but even oxygen cylinders. In a video surfaced, a man can be seen pleading for help for his family member who lies in an ambulance with the van’s oxygen cylinder soon to get empty. The man requests the government to either arrange for a hospital bed for his loved one or kill him with an injection.

This is the scenario in almost every part of the country. Despite the cries and pleads of the people, the government is engaged in fighting the political war, carrying out rallies and conducting the kumb mela to fill its vote bank for the upcoming elections. However, people are constantly questioning the Centre and its lack of attention to the extremely grim situation in India.

Why is the government not acting at the most crucial moment? What was PM Cares funds fate? Wasn’t it formed to allocate resources to people when they needed it? What better time than now to utilize that money and save lives? Why is the government more involved in the election rallies than the agony of the citizens? Why is the PM Cares Fund termed as a private asset? Why is the healthcare sector crumbling down despite people paying taxes and the taxes in fact being skyrocketed for most of the goods in the country? – These are some of the thousands of questions woke citizens are asking the government on social media platforms as RTIs too cannot be filed for direct contact with the government or the court.

Health experts had repeatedly warned of a worse future for India if the government doesn’t gear up for the second wave. However, the warnings fell on deaf ears as the healthcare sector was left unprepared to tackle what was coming next. As the second wave has now entered and started thrashing people, the fatality rates are only increasing.

A dean of a nanoscience school in Gujarat was rushed to a hospital in Ahmedabad after she was found gasping for breath by her students and colleagues. She died after the hospital refused to admit her as they said she wasn’t brought in a “designated ambulance”.

In another case in Jharkhand, a daughter took her ailing father to another city to get him treated and was left to wait in the parking lot. When she was finally attended after half an hour, her father was declared dead by the doctors.

Uttar Pradesh is one of the worst affected states as bodies are piling up outside hospitals. Mortuaries are crying as the dead are getting filled faster than the bodies dumped earlier could be cremated. They are being deprived of the dignity they rightly deserve.

Pune was left with no vacant hospital beds on Monday while all the hospitals in Delhi had run out of ventilator beds.

The crisis is here and shaking the government from its very core to act but political events continue to be held by it. Mask-less politicians, including the Prime Minister, are sending across mindless messages to the herd that blindly follows them. Videos can be seen gushing with people literally jumping on each other to take a dip in the Ganges waters without masks or any bit of social distancing.

While the current scenario seems like the government is behaving like the virus has become an antique name now, the infection in itself is making all attempts to prove its existence by taking advantage of the Centre’s reckless behaviour.
