Breaking Barriers: The Inspirational Journey of Radha, Bihar’s First Woman Zomato Delivery Partner

In the words of the legendary poet Nida Fazli, *”Whether it’s a river or a mountain, one must face it head-on until the challenge is overcome.”* These lines resonate deeply with Radha, a trailblazer from Bihar’s capital, Patna. Overcoming insurmountable odds, Radha, a double amputee and para-athlete, has etched her name in history as Bihar’s first female food delivery partner with Zomato. Her journey is not only a testament to her indomitable spirit but also a beacon of inspiration for countless others.

Radha’s story began in Danapur, Patna. Born healthy, she lost the use of both legs to polio within a year of her birth, though her voice, which was initially absent, miraculously returned. Despite these challenges, Radha never allowed her disability to define her life.

Today, Radha is Zomato’s first female delivery partner in Bihar, representing both women and persons with disabilities. Her journey with Zomato began a year ago, and she stands out among over 6,000 delivery partners in Patna. Sharing her story, Radha explains that her mission is twofold: to support herself and to inspire others in the disabled community to pursue their dreams with determination.

Radha, now 36, faced immense personal losses, including the passing of her father, Ram Khelawan Sahni, during the first wave of COVID-19. After numerous failed attempts to secure employment due to discriminatory attitudes, Radha decided to carve her own path. She joined Zomato, undeterred by naysayers who doubted her capabilities. “People told me I couldn’t do this job. That angered me, and I decided to prove them wrong,” she recalls.

Radha works tirelessly as a delivery partner, often clocking 8 to 10 hours a day. To facilitate her mobility, she purchased a scooter by selling her jewelry and relied on financial help for the remaining amount. Saint Dominic School’s principal supported her by paying the scooter’s EMI for two years, while Father De Melo from Holy Family provided funds to install side wheels, ensuring her safety.

Radha’s achievements extend beyond food delivery. She is a para-badminton and para-rugby player who has represented Bihar at national-level competitions. She participated in a para-athletics event in Jamshedpur and won a bronze medal in wheelchair rugby at a competition in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, last October. Zomato facilitated her travel and accommodations for these events, reflecting the company’s support for her aspirations.

Radha’s life is a testament to resilience and self-reliance. She believes that while physical disability can limit mobility, it cannot constrain the power of positive thinking. “Never lose hope. Disabilities can impair the body but not the mind. Keep your thoughts elevated, and you can change your life,” she says.

Radha’s responsibilities extend to her family as well. With an ailing mother suffering from heart disease, Radha strives to provide for her and her siblings. Among three sisters and one brother, she is the only one who is differently abled, making her accomplishments even more remarkable.

Radha’s journey embodies the power of determination and courage. Her story is a reminder that challenges, no matter how daunting, can be overcome with perseverance. By breaking stereotypes and creating her own path, Radha inspires others to chase their dreams, irrespective of the obstacles.
