Canberra, Australia’s Capital To Reopen Soon Amidst Covid Third Wave

In the latest update on the Covid situation from Australia, the Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), Andrew Barr said on Tuesday that their coronavirus lockdown will come to an end on Friday. This comes amidst the ongoing third wave of the pandemic.

Recreational Areas To Reopen 

As per the announcement made by Barr, stay-at-home restrictions for Canberra residents will be lifted as planned on Thursday midnight. This will mark an end to the lockdown in the Australia’s capital after 64 days.

From Friday, restaurants, bars, non-essential retail, cafes and hair dressers along with personal care services in Canberra will reopen. However, the reopening will have restrictions on the number of people that can be in the same place. The restriction is up to 25 canberra locals will be allowed to gather outdoors and up to 5 people will be allowed to visit another household.

Although, he did say that the Covid 19 cases would increase as the lockdown ends, but 72 percent of over 12 year old in the capital are now fully vaccinated against the Covid 19 virus.

He informed the reporters that the first dose levels will reach to 99 percent towards the end of November.

On Tuesday, Australia reported 1,854 new locally acquired Covid-19 cases, the fewest since late September, as the country continues to battle the third wave. The new cases increased the overall infection tally to 131,415, while the death toll stood at 1,461.

As of now, around 82.4 percent of the Australians aged 16 and above have received at least one Covid 19 vaccine and 62.4 percent are fully vaccinated.

Sydney To Reopen Soon 

This comes after, Sydney on Monday also announced that they will soon start to live with the coronavirus. This means that Sydney will gradually reopen soon.

After nearly four months of lockdown, Sydney’s cafes, gyms and restaurants will be welcoming fully vaccination customers to their venues.
