Century-old Sardar Mahal to be transformed into a cultural center in Hyderabad

The Sardar Mahal, a Nizam-era palace near the famous Charminar, is set to get a makeover after years of neglect, as the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation plans to convert the heritage site into a culture centre (GHMC).

Sardar Mahal will be developed by the Municipal Corporation as part of a public-private partnership (PPP). The GHMC Commissioner has already given his assent to the Terms of Reference (TOR).

Sardar Mahal was erected in the European style for one of Nizam Mir Mahboob Ali Khan’s consorts, Sardar Begum, during the reign of Nizam Mir Mahboob Ali Khan in the 19th century. She never stayed there, though, because she disliked the construction.

The structure, however, took her name and was eventually taken over by the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad, which established the Charminar zone office here in 1965. The GHMC has decided to convert Sardar Mahal into a culture centre to highlight Deccan’s unique history, after the building was certified a heritage building by the Heritage Conservation Committee and INTACH.

The action plan for Sardar Mahal is to maximise the historical, cultural, social, and tourist potential of the Charminar area by creating and strengthening such historic structures surrounding it, according to AIMIM Riyasat Nagar Corporator and member of the GHMC standing committee meeting Mirza Saleem Baig.

He went on to say that the Sardar Mahal would be maintained for a 10-year concessionaire tenure, based on the public-private built, operate, and transfer paradigm. The commercial firm will examine tourism in the area, create a demand assessment study, and offer a complete action plan for the development of Sardar Mahal. A valuation assessment, a feasibility study report, project structuring, and a financial model for the project will also be prepared by the agency.
