GHMC planning to rejuvenate Hyderabad’s lakes before summer, rain arrives

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is planning to rejuvenate the city’s lakes before summer arrives, and much before the rains begin. Cleaning work at 39 lakes is already nearing completion. At these water bodies, water hyacinth is being removed by Floating Trash Collectors (FTCs), and waste is also being fished out.

Maisamma Cheruvu in Kukatpally, Nallagandla Cheruvu in Serilingampally, Nalla Cheruvu in Uppal, and Safiguda Lake are just a few of the 39 lakes where works are progressing rapidly.

In addition, a GHMC official stated that works on 19 lakes in various regions of the city will begin soon. The 19 lakes that will soon be free from water hyacinth and garbage include Vennelagadda Cheruvu and IDL Lake in Kukatpally, Gopinagar Lake and Regulakunta in Serilingampally, and Vennelagadda Cheruvu and IDL Lake in Serilingampally.

“Once the lakes have been cleansed, the goal is to build walking tracks and beautiful greenery around them. All steps to protect the lakes will be taken as well,” he stated.

Six FTCs were recently inaugurated by Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao and then handed over to GHMC Zonal officials to speed up the lake rejuvenation process. The Minister also directed GHMC and Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority personnel to concentrate on rejuvenating water bodies in and around the city.

In the meantime, the GHMC has begun Anti Larval Operations (ALOs) at lakes that are being regenerated.

GHMC Chief Entomologist Ram Babu stated that though most dengue cases were reported in September/October and Malaria cases peaked in August each year, the ALOs were currently being implemented so that they were completely equipped to combat vector-borne diseases.

“Removing water hyacinth from lakes will help decrease mosquito populations significantly.  We have decided to take preventative actions against mosquito-borne diseases now, rather than waiting until peak season. Following this, ALO is underway After that, ALO will begin,” he stated.

Drones have also been deployed to kill mosquito larvae in a number of lakes. Some of the lakes where pesticides were sprayed using drones include Banda Cheruvu in Malkajgiri, Langer Houz Lake, and Ramanthapur Lake.
