Challenges Facing BRS in GHMC Ahead of Assembly Elections

As it prepares for the next assembly elections, the governing Bharatiya Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is dealing with substantial difficulties. As it deals with internal divisions, leader defections to other parties, and rising public unhappiness, the party’s chances to reproduce its 2018 triumph might be hampered.

The GHMC has 24 assembly constituencies, with BRS members presently holding the majority of them. Six assembly constituencies in Secunderabad Lok Sabha constituency are represented by BRS MLAs, whereas all seven assembly constituencies in Malkajgiri Lok Sabha constituency are held by BRS MLAs.

Four assembly seats in the Chevella Lok Sabha constituency support the BRS. It’s worth mentioning that the BRS only won two seats in the 2014 elections, in Secunderabad and Malkajgiri.

The BRS experienced difficulty during the municipal elections and had to create an alliance with the Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (MIM) to secure 56 seats. In addition, four BJP corporators shifted their support to the BRS.

MLAs and central leaders are concerned in Amberpet, Maheshwaram, LB Nagar, Jubilee Hills, and Patancheru. Unlike past assembly elections, in which the BRS had no opposition, the 2017 elections promise to be a close race. The Congress is gaining ground, while the BJP is establishing itself as a strong opponent among its corporators.

The BRS has a difficult route to victory in the next assembly elections, needing its leaders to negotiate internal conflicts and reignite popular support in order to ensure electoral success.
