Charminar needs urgent attention as lime plasters on inner walls, staircase peel off

As lime plasters on the inner walls and staircase are peeling off at the Charminar, a historical monument in Hyderabad, it requires urgent attention.

Even though the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) periodically repairs the outer structure of the historical monument, the inner walls and staircase are largely neglected.

Especially when climbing up the historical monuments, visitors are experiencing difficulties due to the damages.

Post-COVID, the number of visitors to the historical monument has increased. The monument is being visited by people from other states and foreigners.

As the number of visitors increases, revenue collection will increase, but damages are escalating as climbers use the holes in the walls as railings.

A senior ASI official told TOI that repairs to Charminar are a continuous process and are determined by the damages.

History behind Charminar

The monument is located in Hyderabad and is one of the city’s most famous landmarks.

The fifth king of the Qutub Shahi dynasty built it in 1591 after moving the capital from Golconda to Hyderabad. As a result of its four minarets, it was called a “Charminar”.

A popular and busy local market surrounds the structure, making it one of Hyderabad’s most popular tourist attractions. As it is adjacent to Makkah Masjid, the city’s main mosque, the Charminar has become a site for numerous festivals, including Eid-ul-Adha and Eid al-Fitr.

The ASI is currently responsible for maintaining the historical monument.

Together with the Kakatiya Kala Thoranam of Warangal, the monument was incorporated into the official emblem of Telangana State in 2014.

In Telangana, there are four ASI monuments. Hyderabad is home to three of them.

These monuments include:

  1. Warangal Fort (Warangal).
  2. Archaeological Site Museum, Kondapur (Hyderabad)
  3. Charminar (Hyderabad)
  4. Golconda Fort (Hyderabad)
