Concerns Over Metro Rail Connectivity to Hyderabad’s Old City

Congress senior leader Mohammed Ali Shabbir has expressed questions about the BRS government’s commitment to bringing Metro Rail to Hyderabad’s Old City. Shabbir Ali expressed concern about the timing of land acquisition notices, implying that the project may be postponed until after the Assembly elections to benefit the AIMIM party.

According to Shabbir Ali, the government has budgeted cash for Metro Rail connectivity in the Old City, but there is no documented agreement between the government and the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL). He questioned how the HMRL could begin construction without a Detailed Project Report and full financial disclosure, especially given the estimated cost of over Rs 2,000 crore while claiming completion within the Rs 500 crore budget.

Furthermore, Shabbir Ali claimed that the Finance Department had not released the allocated monies to the HMRL. Despite this, the government required the HMRL to release a statement declaring the start of the project.

He emphasized that the previous Congress Government had approved a 72-kilometer phase-1 metro project, which included a route from MGBS-Imlibun to Falaknuma. However, the BRS administration suspended the Old City corridor’s progress while finishing the remaining 67 km and launching operations.

Shabbir Ali questioned why the administration waited until the election season to issue land acquisition notifications if they truly planned to connect the Old City to Metro Rail. He also chastised the administration for failing to act on matters such as property purchase and route alignment changes during the last nine years.
