Congress Promises Rs 5,000 Crore for Minority Welfare in Telangana Elections

In Telangana, the Congress party intends to include social programs for Muslims in its platform ahead of the Assembly elections. The party just ended the penultimate open session of the Draft Committee for the Minorities Declaration in Hyderabad, with intentions to release the “Minorities Declaration” soon.

This action is considered as an attempt to court the Muslim minority, which accounts for around 13% of the state’s population and has the ability to influence the outcome in 45 of the 119 Assembly seats.

The proclamation makes many significant recommendations, including boosting the minority welfare budget to Rs 5,000 crore, increasing the budget for marriage plans, and adopting a special law to prohibit religious prejudice. By adding these pledges in its platform, the Congress hopes to emulate its victory in Karnataka.

The action also comes amid claims of a “secret understanding” between the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) party and the BJP, which has upset certain members of the Muslim community. Congress leaders have voiced worry about the current 4% Muslim reserve being reduced to 3%, which they seek to address.

In its proclamation, Congress intends to add commitments to construct new medical, engineering, and other professional institutions, as well as a private minority university.

Previously, the Telangana Muslim Organizations Joint Action Committee issued a Muslim declaration outlining 22 demands that any political party seeking Muslim votes should promise to meet, such as allocating at least 10 MLA seats to Muslims and increasing reservation for marginalized Muslims in public education and employment.
