Congress Protests GHMC’s Handling of Hyderabad’s Rain Crisis

On July 28, tensions erupted at the GHMC headquarters in Hyderabad after Congress party workers protested the KCR government’s handling of the city’s severe rainfall. Due to incessant downpours in the area, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) placed Hyderabad as one of nine districts under red alert.

Congress politician Anjan Kumar led the demonstration, accusing Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao of being inattentive to the situation and “sleeping in his farmhouse in Pragathi Bhavan.” Protesters requested that the government compensate people harmed by the torrential rains with Rs. 10,000, as well as free food and rations.

Police were called in to calm things down, and they allowed a ten-member delegation to enter the GHMC premises and present their case to the GHMC commissioner. However, some party members refused to follow police orders and sought to enter the office by scaling the barred gates.

During the protest, members of the Congress party yelled shouts against the GHMC and KTR (K T Rama Rao, Telangana’s Minister for IT and Industries), expressing their dissatisfaction with the government’s response to the monsoon situation.

Finally, police detained the protestors and transported them to several police stations. Congress politician V Hanumantha Rao, on the other hand, was able to enter the building and conduct a demonstration in front of the lift on the ground level.

The protest reflects the opposition’s rising dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the excessive rain and its impact on the people of Hyderabad. The situation remains tense as authorities continue to deal with the issues brought by the city’s and other parts of Telangana’s continued severe rainfall.
