Cracker Shops Given Guidelines from GHMC

With Diwali approaching, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has issued strict guidelines for those seeking temporary permits to set up stalls selling crackers (15’x15′) in any of its playgrounds. The permission of the civic body should be preceded by clearances from the local police station and fire station against payment of the relevant fee. The per day rent for each 15’ x 15’ stall is put at Rs 7,600.

All zonal commissioners have been given the authority to approve applications to set up stalls and issue temporary trade licenses at the local/zonal level until October 27, provided that the applicant follows all governing rules. Individuals, associations, and societies can set up stalls.

Reports have indicated that the GHMC has also mandated some aspects such as maintaining a safe distance from one another, providing water, wooden stands, using fire-resistant materials and extinguishers, having a 24×7 watch and ward staff, and having all electrical connections duly certified by a competent inspector. There is a strong prohibition against using child labor.

It is also worth mentioning that almost every shop in the city has been decked out in preparation for a big Diwali sale. Major markets have colorful displays and illuminations, and temporary shops have opened to capitalize on seasonal sales.

In the evenings, Begum Bazaar, Charkaman in Old City, Ramkote, Chikkadpally, Dilsukhnagar, and General Bazaar are teeming with families out for their festive shopping.

Pavements have been taken over by shops selling earthen toys, pots, and lamps, as well as those selling sugar toys and special puffed rice, both of which are traditional do’s for the festival of lights.

For the past 18 years, Raj Nanadan of Amrutha Enterprises in Begum Bazaar Chetri has been selling Diwali props such as earthen toys, lamps, and other items.
