Damascus International Airport to Resume International Flights Next Week

Syria announced on Saturday that Damascus International Airport would reopen for international flights starting Tuesday, marking a significant step toward restoring normalcy after last month’s removal of President Bashar al-Assad. The resumption follows a temporary suspension of commercial flights due to the political upheaval.

Ashhad Al-Salibi, head of the General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport, confirmed the development, stating, “We announce we will start receiving international flights to and from Damascus International Airport from Tuesday.” He also reassured airlines of ongoing efforts to rehabilitate both the Aleppo and Damascus airports, with support from international partners, to accommodate flights from around the globe.

While international aid planes and diplomatic delegations have already been landing in Syria, this marks the first reopening of international commercial flights to the capital. Domestic flights have also resumed, with the first flight since Assad’s ouster departing from Damascus to Aleppo on December 18.

In a significant move, Qatar Airways has announced it will resume flights to Damascus after nearly 13 years, beginning with three weekly flights starting Tuesday. A Qatari official revealed that Doha had extended assistance to the new Syrian authorities to help restore operations at the airport.

The reopening of Damascus International Airport is seen as a critical milestone for the country as it begins rebuilding its infrastructure and reconnecting with the international community. The move is expected to pave the way for increased humanitarian aid, diplomatic engagement, and economic recovery in Syria.
