The latest incident at a storage facility in Nalgonda town has highlighted the risky tactics utilised by dishonest fruit merchants for fake fruit ripening. To avoid the restriction on carbide, a dangerous ripening chemical, these merchants have turned to ethylene gas as an alternative.
The proprietor of the New Star Fruits Company created a mechanism to deliver ethylene gas into the storage facility for ripening fruits, notably bananas, during the investigation into the explosion. The gas was pumped into the storage unit via a dedicated conduit connected to the indoor unit of an air conditioner, posing substantial dangers.

Concerns have been expressed by air conditioner professionals concerning the risks involved with this practise. Because an air conditioner’s exterior unit is powered by electricity, any ethylene gas leakage could result in a highly explosive catastrophe. Furthermore, the compressor within the outside unit is often filled with a less flammable gas known as R22. To improve fruit ripening, this method appears to pump the gas into the storage facility via the air conditioner’s inside unit.
The existence of several fruit storage containers in residential areas of Nalgonda town raises concerns about public safety. Given the health concerns of artificial fruit ripening and the possibility for catastrophic mishaps, local residents are encouraging authorities to address this concerning matter as soon as possible.
