DDLJ turns 25: SRK Uncovers Why He Was Sceptical to play as a Romantic Hero

Mumbai: (DDLJ) Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge is 25 years of age on Tuesday, and Bollywood celebrity Shah Rukh Khan glances back at the 1995 blockbuster that helped concrete his lover boy picture that makes females weak in the knees even today.

SRK shocks you by saying he was at first skeptical about his capacity to pull off the romantic scenes in the ever-famous romantic tale.

Shah Rukh remembered: “I was told by many people that I looked unconventional, very different from what the perception of a leading man was. I did think, possibly, not being handsome enough — or, as they named it back then, ‘chocolaty’ — would make me unsuitable for romantic roles. Also, I am really shy and awkward with women, and I didn’t know how I would say all the loving, romantic moments.”

He beamed: “I have to confess, for someone who doesn’t love mushy and romantic movies, the scenes Kajol and I did make me feel fuzzy and warm! There, I said it.”

Published to the public on October 20, 1995, the Aditya Chopra directorial, which featured Kajol and SRK, the film narrates the romantic tale of Raj (SRK) and Simran (Kajol) who live in the UK. The film commenced the trend of NRI romances on the Bollywood screen and furthermore rearranged romance in the Hindi film industry forever.

Remembering playing the role of Raj, SRK stated: “Raj was unlike anything I had done. Prior to ‘DDLJ’, there was ‘Anjaam’, ‘Darr’,  and ‘Baazigar’ — films in which I had represented negative characters. Also, I constantly thought that I wasn’t cut out to play any romantic type of character. So, when I was presented with the chance by Adi and Yash (Chopra) Ji to attempt the role, I was thrilled to work with him but had no clue how to go about it, and also if I would be able to do it rightly.”

He included: “It was one of those roles that I realized I can do with me using a version of my real self. So, you might notice some quirks, habits and mannerisms that were accurate to my off-screen persona — especially the sense of humor part.”

DDLJ would proceed to turn into the longest-running film throughout the entire existence of the Indian film industry. It ran for further than 20 years in Mumbai’s Maratha Mandir theatre.

Aside from Shah Rukh and Kajol, late entertainer Amrish Puri, Anupam Kher, Farida Jalal, and Parmeet Sethi additionally left a permanent mark with excellent performances.

Past crisp narrating, characterization and acting, the film is additionally recollected ’til the present time for the songs Jatin-Lalit made.

SRK says he actually still listens in to the songs of the film.

Shah Rukh thought back: “I don’t change the radio channel when a DDLJ song comes on. I can never get sick of them. They bring back recollections of a film that paved my path forward in an unforgettable way.”

As per him, “DDLJ” helped him “concrete my place and got me popularity a way that I didn’t figure it would”.

Shah Rukh joked: “As for perception, I always felt that I can play more unconventional roles because of my looks, but ‘DDLJ’ has belied that and I still struggle to make that one macho unconventional kick a** character which suits me, or so I thought. But it has been a struggle to not be acknowledged romantic and sweet for the last 25 years — a struggle, I guess, I am happy to lose.”
