Delay in Malakpet IT Tower Project Sparks Speculation Over Musi Rejuvenation Impact

Over a year has passed since the foundation stone for a state-of-the-art IT Tower in Malakpet, Hyderabad, was laid with the promise of generating employment opportunities in the IT and ITES sectors. Despite the initial enthusiasm, the project, estimated to cost Rs. 700 crore and expected to create nearly 50,000 jobs, has yet to take off due to delays in formal agreements with contractors. As the project stalls, speculation has emerged regarding its potential impact on the broader Musi rejuvenation project.

The foundation stone for the IT Tower was laid on October 2, 2023, by former IT Minister KT Rama Rao, accompanied by Hyderabad MP and AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi. Located near PVR Mall, the tower was envisioned as a transformative project for the area, occupying 11 acres with 15 lakh square feet of built-up space. At the time, KT Rama Rao confidently declared that the new IT Tower would become the defining landmark of Malakpet, surpassing the iconic TV tower. He had assured the public that construction would be completed within 36 months.

However, progress has been slow. According to a senior official from Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC), which is responsible for the project, the delay stems from the lack of signed agreements with the selected bidder. “Agreements have to be signed with the bidder for commencing the works. Hopefully, it would be done in November,” the official stated.

The delay was further exacerbated by the timing of elections. Shortly after the foundation was laid, the state Assembly elections were announced, followed by the Lok Sabha elections, which caused further setbacks in project planning and execution.

Recently, during a press conference at the Secretariat, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy was asked whether the Musi river rejuvenation project would have any impact on the Malakpet IT Tower. The Musi project is a major urban renewal initiative aimed at reviving the polluted river and improving surrounding infrastructure. Responding to the inquiry, CM Revanth Reddy dismissed any connections between the two projects, stating, “It will be addressed in the IT policy. If not, IT Minister D. Sridhar Babu will give a detailed explanation whenever possible.”

Although Revanth Reddy downplayed the possibility of any impact, the ongoing delay has raised concerns among residents and stakeholders. The Musi project has been seen as a significant urban improvement effort, and any overlap in timelines or resources could potentially affect the IT Tower’s progress.

As the people of Malakpet await the realization of a project that could bring substantial employment opportunities to the area, the delay continues to frustrate many. The IT Tower was expected to be a game-changer for Hyderabad’s old city, but with political transitions and bureaucratic slowdowns, the question of whether the project will truly transform Malakpet remains unanswered.
